Introduction

An indoor skiing centre client came to us with the pitch of creating a VR skiing experience for customers that come to the center and don't ski - either because they're injured, too scared or have a disability and can't (or just want to have a go skiing in VR).

We leapt at this opportunity and were super excited to make a concept for them.

Problem

The main purpose of this VR experience was to let people unable to ski to virtually ski, meaning that accessibility was the top priority for this project.

We needed to create a solution that gave the impression of skiing, that was easy to learn, could be controlled by anyone and created as little VR sickness as possible.

Solution

First we needed to get the movement correct, so we created did a lot of experimentation to make sure we ended up with the most accessible controlling mechanics, while also keeping them as close as possible to the typical movement of skiing.

We resulted in a hands only control scheme, with the typical pushing motion for increasing speed and rotating both hands left and right for steering. The result felt great, striking a great balance between realism and accessibility.
From there I started to design the level, trying to easy to pick up, with some special features like jumps and a tunnel, as well as adding some hidden shortcuts to help with replay ability.
I also worked closely with the artist to create a visual style that worked well, while also creating a graphic design style for the 2D elements that was cohesive with the overall visual style as well. I also made a quick trailer demoing the level, which was used in the pitch to the client.

Results

The resulting demo game was well received, it played well, was accessible and visually was really attractive - And I found a banging song for the trailer.
